Nikolaus Franke, who made an excellent speech on user innovation, mentioned a rather interesting thing about Botox. The Botulinum toxin was originally developed for treatment of spasms but around two thirds of the revenues come from use in wrinkle removal. Beauty in mind.

  1. Unfortunately Nikolaus Franke, may have caused a misunderstanding about Botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin is one of the most dangerous toxins produced in the nature. The cause is the bacteria Chlostridium Botulinum. Damaged cans of food, sausages, and improperly handled food products, may house this bacteria, and the toxin. If you eat it, you have very small changes of surviving.
    The invention in the 50s was the purification of this bacterial toxin and the discovery of the possibility to use it for spasm relaxing, firstly in ophtalmology.
